To sign up for an API Key, you must register for an account. Once registered, you will be sent a confirmation e-mail. After your e-mail is verified, you will have access to two API keys which you can use to start building your app.
You are allowed immediate access to two API Keys after account registration. If you require three or more API Keys, you must contact us to request more.
If your app is considered "commercial" - supported by advertising, or makes money selling a product - you will be required to pay Merriam-Webster a licensing fee to use our API with your application. If your application is considered "non-commercial", you are free to use the API. However, if your application uses more than 1,000 queries per day, you will be required to pay a licensing fee.
Please contact us if your application is considered commercial or if your application requires more than 1,000 queries per day.
You are allowed 1,000 queries per API Key per day. If your application requires access to more than 1,000 queries per day, you will be required to pay a licensing fee.
All applications using Merriam-Webster APIs must feature the Merriam-Webster logo. Please refer to our Brand Guidelines for directions on the use of our logo, brand name, and product names.
Our APIs are offered in both JSON and XML format, but please note that our XML APIs will be deprecated October 9th, 2019. We recommend that all new applications be built using the JSON format.
